I first heard about the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, when I attended the Australian Landscape Conference in September 2009. Stephanie Alexander was one of the many wonderful experts who spoke at the conference.
The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation is an organisation created to educate children about growing and cooking their own food. The aim of the program is to influence children’s choices on a variety of foods. It teaches them how the natural world works and how to care for it. Growing seasonal fruit and vegetables helps the kids understand, what is to be planted, the life cycle of different plants and what is available to eat at different stages of the year.
The program is aimed at grades 3 to 6, as it is believed this is a good age to educate children about food choices as they are old enough to understand the danger of working in a kitchen. It is based at public schools and funded by grants from the government. However there is a Subscription Program that anyone can join, where all the information to start a kitchen garden is supplied. This is a good idea for private schools, as they are able to fund the program themselves.
The idea is that the kids help with the process of designing, building and maintain the garden. Also harvesting, cooking and then sharing a meal together. The concept of Growing, Harvesting, Preparing and Sharing is a lovely thing for kids to learn and pass onto their families.
